In recent years, the market has become quite touristy, as almost all Sacred Valley tours stop there. To discover its more traditional side, I recommend you get away from the handicrafts and visit the side where the fruits and vegetables are found. We continue the trip enjoying the wonderful landscape of the Sacred Valley until we reach Ollantaytambo where you can visit the archaeological complex of the same name, one one of the largest in Peru, which is strategically located on top of a mountain. Afterwards, you will descend to the town of Ollantaytambo, one of the most important towns in the Sacred Valley of the Incas in Cusco. It is the only place that preserves its ancient Inca urban design. Because it is an obligatory step before reaching Machu Picchu, it is highly visited. However, ‘Ollanta’ has its own charms. The main one of all are its Inca archaeological remains. We will continue through the salt mines of Maras, one of the most beautiful places to see near Cuzco. 3,000 salt mines at an altitude of 3,380 meters fed by an underground spring, which were already exploited in pre-Inca times.
Some pink salt pools from the Andes of just five square meters each, which leave a spectacular landscape.
To finish visiting Moray,. These are terraces or agricultural platforms built in depressions or gigantic natural holes. These terraces are concentrically superimposed, taking the shape of a gigantic amphitheatre. The largest hole is 150 m deep and the average height of the platforms is 1.80 m.
According to historians these constructions constituted an important agricultural laboratory of the Inca empire. Since its platforms are built with their respective irrigation channels and each one of them constitutes a microclimate. What is striking is the great difference in average annual temperature between the top and the bottom of the depressions, a difference that reaches up to 15°C.
