City Tour Puno

The City Tour in Puno begins at the traditional hill of Huajsapata (viewpoint) with a colorful view of the city and the bay of Puno and the peninsulas of Capachica and Chucuito. During the tour we get to know the history and the thousand year old legends of the lake as well as the Dreyer museum, Plaza de Armas (Main Square), the cathedral, the Candelaria sanctuary the festival of Candelaria which is the patron of the city and the declaration as cultural heritage by the UNESCO, the Pino park, San Carlos school, workshops where they embody clothes for traditional dances, the Deustua arch, the Puno pier, the Yavari ship and others that show the history of the highlands, the Titicaca Lake and the city.

Itinerary

Day 1: Puno

1. Deustua Arch:  Located 3 blocks from the main Street in Puno we find this monument built in honor of the Peruvians who fought the battle of Junin and Ayacucho. Built in 1846 it has two gazebos at its sides. This monument has a great historic and moral value.

2. Pino Park: Located in the center of Puno we find this monument dedicated to Dr. Manuel Pino, a war hero in the battle with Chile. The monument was built in 1901.

3. Carlos Dreyer Museum: This is the provincial municipality of Puno in which we can see the timeline from pre-Inca until colonial times. It has rooms with different Andean cultures like Pukara, Tiahuanaco and Inca as well as a short recap of the Spanish colonial life. Without a doubt it’s a great museum to visit.

4. Puno Cathedral : Built in the XVII century and with the status as a minor basilica. The façade was sculpted by Simon de Asto. The Cathedral was built over the Devils siege and was finished 25th of May 1757. It’s a sample of the Spanish baroque that includes Andean elements and gives the mestizo character to the monument.

5. Naval Yavari Museum: Built in 1862 and anchored in the bay of Puno it was delivered piece by piece on mules at the shores of the highest navigable lake in the world (3810 m.a.s.l.).

6. Huajsapata hill viewpoint: The Huajsapata hill has an altitude of 45 meters; Huajsapata means “witness of my loves” and comes from a song in honor of this monument. It’s a natural viewpoint of chalkstone from where you have a complete panorama of Puno and the marvelous Titicaca Lake. The viewpoint is located four blocks from the main square. It is said that there are caves with underground paths that connects Puno with the temple of Koricancha in Cusco.
